Applications are now open for Britten Sinfonia Academy 2017-18

The deadline for applications has now been extended to Friday 3 March 2017, 5.30pm.

Who can apply?

Britten Sinfonia Academy welcomes applications by Wednesday 1 March 2017 from:

•    Secondary-school aged musicians
•    Grade 8 standard or above
•    Dynamic and passionate musicians willing to challenge themselves, explore and take risks
•    Willing to travel to courses across the East of England including Cambridge, Norwich, Saffron Walden and London

We recruit for violin | viola | cello | double bass | flute | oboe | clarinet | bassoon | horn | trumpet | percussion | harp | piano

We also consider talented instrumentalists on other instruments and composers.  If your instrument is not listed above or you would like to apply as a composer, please contact the Creative Learning team before submitting your application.

How to apply

To apply you must submit:

1.    A completed application available online here or as a PDF to download here
2.    A completed teacher’s statement* available online here or as a PDF to download here

*In order to fully complete your application your instrumental or composition teacher must submit a short paragraph for you before the deadline on 3 March 2017.

What happens next?

If your application is successful you will be invited to a first round individual audition in April. Following the first audition, successful candidates will be invited to a second round group audition in July after which you will be offered a full or associate membership.

The first round of auditions will take place across the east of England in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Essex. We ask that you keep the following dates free and we will confirm venues by Friday 10 March 2017.
•    Saturday 22 April 2017
•    Sunday 23 April 2017
•    Saturday 29 April 2017
•    Sunday 30 April 2017

First Round Individual Audition
If you are invited to a first round audition you will be asked to:
– play two contrasting pieces lasting no more than 8 minutes altogether – an accompanist will be provided
– play a short orchestral extract from a selection that you will be sent to prepare in advance
– play a short sight reading task

Second Round Group Audition
Successful first round individual auditionees will be invited to attend a group session second round audition on Sunday 16 July 2017, you must be available for this date. On this day you will be asked to engage in chamber group rehearsals and creative music-making activities with other auditionees and Britten Sinfonia professional musicians. Music will be sent out for you to prepare in advance of this day.
