Britten Sinfonia’s spring series at Saffron Hall – where the orchestra has been Resident Orchestra since 2016 – has just been announced. Three spirited concerts will punctuate the spring between February and April 2022 with a celebration of Vaughan Williams’ 150th anniversary, a journey across Russia, and an evening with Ian Bostridge and Sir James MacMillan.

Friday 11 February, Saffron Hall
A very special evening of pastoral music celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams. His elegiac and yearning Oboe Concerto (performed by Britten Sinfonia Principal Oboe, Nicholas Daniel) is a perfect partner to the soaring melodies of The Lark Ascending, heard here alongside music by Holst, Sibelius, Bridge and Grace Williams.

Tenor Ian Bostridge joins the orchestra for a concert curated and conducted by composer James MacMillan centred on the influence of folk music on composers. Music includes a new arrangement of MacMillan’s Three Scottish Songs, settings of poems by Scottish poet William Soutar, and the reflective A Meditation on Iona, alongside a selection of folk song arrangements by Britten, Grainger, Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances and a new arrangement by Britten Sinfonia Leader Jacqueline Shave of Bartok’s Burlesque from his String Quartet No. 6.

Sunday 24 April 2022, Saffron Hall
A distinctly Russian evening with rising stars Mishka Rushdie Momen and Matilda Lloyd. Shostakovich’s virtuosic Concerto is paired with Prokofiev’s whimsical Visions Fugitives, the original solo piano version alternating with an arrangement with orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s glorious Serenade for Strings and a new work by Russian-British composer Alissa Firsova complete the programme.
