Jacqueline Shave

Britten Sinfonia and Leader Jacqueline Shave make a welcome return to their Saffron Hall home for this very special concert marking the 85th birthday of the celebrated Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Pärt’s ethereal, meditative music, characterised by hypnotic repetitions and bell-like intonations, is inspired by Eastern Orthodox liturgy and has a uniquely timeless simplicity and purity. This programme focuses on two of his most powerful and influential works: the contemplative and profoundly moving Tabula Rasa for strings and prepared piano; and Pärt’s homage to a fellow musical purist, Benjamin Britten, in which tubular bells toll over layered descending strings. Britten’s Young Apollo, his own expression of musical simplicity and clarity in the form of a radiant fanfare for piano and orchestra, together with Vaughan Williams’ rhapsodic Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, complete the programme.
