One of the most sought-after composers of his generation, the pioneering Nico Muhly, takes the reins in the third of Sadler’s Wells’ Composer Series. In Drawn Lines, three celebrated and diverse choreographers respond to Muhly’s contemporary classical music, played live by one of the world’s most distinguished ensembles, Britten Sinfonia.
Inspired by murder ballad The Two Sisters, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Keegan-Dolan interprets dark folk-song arrangement The Only Tune. Seven dancers from his Ireland-based company Teaċ Daṁsa will be joined on stage by folk singer Sam Amidon and nine musicians.
New Wave Associate Julie Cunningham (former dancer with Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Michael Clark Company) selects the piece Drones, a reflection on the subtle and constant noise in most dwelling places.
Choreographed by Iván Pérez and set to Mothertongue composed by Muhly, Flutter is a vibrant work that explores stepping into the unknown. Created on and featuring ballet superstar Natalia Osipova, the piece received its world premiere as part of Pure Dance at Sadler’s Wells, in 2018.
Following the successful collaborations between Wayne McGregor and Mark Anthony Turnage (2011), and then Thomas Ades with Karole Armitage, Crystal Pite, Wayne McGregor and Alexander Whitley (2014), Sadler’s Wells’ Composer Series partners contemporary composers’ music with exceptional contemporary choreographers to create new works.
