Summary

A cello, piano, marimba and assorted drums – this cross-section of Britten Sinfonia’s line-up presents a series of varied, shorter pieces with broad appeal for younger and older audiences.

Cellist Caroline Dearnley, pianist Huw Watkins join forces with percussionist Tim Gunnell to introduce their programme as it unfolds. It will include The Swan from Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals, some solo Bach for cello, piano Preludes by Debussy, Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1 and, to complement the pieces featured in tonight’s evening concerts by Arvo Pärt in his 85th birthday year, his exquisite Spiegel in Spiegel for cello and piano. All in all, an informal, entertaining hour of high-class music-making for a Sunday morning – relaxing and dazzling in equal parts.
