The Robot and the Bluebird

A wonderful and interactive live orchestral experience for Key Stage 1 pupils and their teachers.

“My old heart only ever said tick tock,” said the Robot, “but now my heart is singing”.

About The Robot and The Bluebird

Based on the children’s book by David Lucas, with specially created animations by Victor Craven and new music by composer Raph Clarkson, performed by Britten Sinfonia, the performance tells the story of a Robot with a broken heart who gives his remaining strength to save the life of a little bird, and finds meaning and purpose in doing so.

The book explores themes of empathy and kindness, friendship, seasons and technology and can be explored through the English, Art and PSHE curriculum.

This show is suitable for all ages and designed especially for children aged 4 to 7.

What does the performance involve?

The performance will have a 12-piece ensemble of musicians from Britten Sinfonia and a presenter, Sheena Masson. There will also be live animations projected behind the performers based on the illustrations from the book. It will introduce the children to live instruments with the chance to join in with singing, body percussion, and a guided moment of calm.

The performance lasts approximately 1 hour and was designed for children aged 4 to 8.

How can you prepare for the performance?

The concert was designed to be sung by children so we ask that teachers commit to attending a 1-hour twilight CPD session with workshop leader and presenter, Sheena Masson. The sessions will be held between 16:30 and 17:30 on the following dates:

  • Monday 21 October - The Apex, Bury St. Edmunds
  • Monday 4 November - Saffron Walden County High School, Saffron Walden
  • Wednesday 6 November - Trumpington Meadows Primary School, Cambridge

Please contact learning@brittensinfonia.com if you are unable to attend the CPD session but would still like to bring your pupils to the concert. If you would like a sneak peek at the songs, you can take a look at the Resource Hub here.
