GEORGE STEVENSON
Magnum Opus 2025
Scottish composer George Stevenson has worked with musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Psappha Ensemble, Berkeley Ensemble, Assembly Project and BCMG NEXT, as well as dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet. Other works have been commissioned by Moscow Viola Festival, Suzuki Scotland and Pentaèdre.
His orchestral piece False Summit was performed by the LSO under François-Xavier Roth through the Panufnik Scheme. This led to another LSO commission entitled Vanishing City which was premiered at the Barbican under Ryan Wigglesworth, with a further performance conducted by Gianandrea Noseda.
As a member of the RSNO Composers' Hub, George worked closely with the players on a number of projects, including a ten minute commission for orchestra entitled Braided Waters. He was also awarded Psappha's Peter Maxwell Davies Commission.
Other past awards include First Prize in the St Magnus Composers' competition, as well as the Dvořák Prize at the International Dvořák Competition. George was a PRS Accelerate Scheme composer and winner of "The Night With..." Call for Scores, the Montréal Concert Society Prize and the Risuonanze Festival Call for Scores.
Most recently, George was featured on a new recording of works commissioned by Psappha, in partnership with NMC. His music will also be included on a 2025 album of LSO commissions.
George studied with Julian Anderson and Joseph Phibbs, and holds a Masters from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He also received an Advanced Diploma in Composition from Moscow Conservatoire under Alexander Tchaikovsky.
